For centuries, animals have been used as the first line of defense against Toxics. A canary in a mine served as a living monitor of poisonous gases. Scientists used fish to make sure there were no contaminants in the water. And curiously, even with the most modern advances, it could take days to detect a fatal chemical.

Chip measures the purity of the water piping brown
A team of researchers led by Professor Yosi Shacham-DIAMANDD, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Tel Aviv (TAU) has developed a nanometric laboratory that will allow the measurement of water quality in real time. This “laboratory on a Chip” represents a major breakthrough in maintaining clean and pure water, safe from polluting agents and bioterrorist attacks.
“We have developed a laboratory of essentially half a square centimeter, using genetically altered bacteria that are” ignited “when exposed to a certain chemical present in the water,” says Yosi. The technology of this chip works to detect even the smallest quantities of compounds produced by the bacterium.
Instead of using animals to help detect threats in the water supply, Yosi says: “Our system is based on a plastic chip that is more human, faster, more sensitive and much more economical.”
It has numerous applications mainly in the area of national security and health, and it is a project founded by the American agency DARPA, which already has 3 million dollars invested in it.
