When we talk about renewables generally come to consideration European countries and Asian, which
is where more impulse are having. Rare is the time that a Latin American nation is mentioned. However,
this is beginning to be thing of the past, since Costa Rica is raising your hand and you have to pay attention.
During that far this year Costa Rica has accumulated 75 days depending exclusivelyon renewable energy:
January, February and part of March (until the day of the report). How has this country–like feat? There are
several factors that came together tomake this possible…
First rainy conditions have allowed the 4 major reservoirs in the country are over capacity. We are talking
about Arenal, Cachi, Angostura and Pirrís. In addition, other hydroelectric plants have also been above
expectations. This has undoubtedly been the main part of the feat.
But the country also has other alternative energy projects: wind, photovoltaic, geothermal, and biomass, which helped to meet the country‘s energy demand. It is true that it is not a country with a huge population, but that does not diminish the achievement obtained.
And it is not simple luck. In Costa Rica, things are doing well because it occupies thesecond place in Latin America in relation to electricity coverage, with a 99.4 per centof households with electricity. And in 2014 was the first place in regard to the development of alternative energy sources. An example to be followed.
